The practice of tarot reading dates back several hundreds of years. Where and when did it originate? That’s anyone’s guess, however most historical evidence leads us to believe that it began in northern Italy in the early 1400’s. Even more reason to love Italy! Although Tarot card art and symbolism is rooted in ancient symbolism and esoteric knowledge, in many ways some things never change. Today’s Tarot decks vary widely from ancient decks and even other modern decks. But they all share commonalities. Today’s Tarot card decks have four different suits of tarot cards, as well as twenty-two major arcana cards. Similar to playing cards (which you can also read!), the suits of the tarot are wands (clubs), cups (hearts), pentacles (diamonds), and swords (spades). Cards with wands symbolize creativity, work, growth, and strength. Pentacles represent finances, material possessions and technology. The sword suit gives messages about beliefs, individual thoughts and actions. The last suit, cups, represents love, emotions, and family matters. Using great focus and intuition, tarot readers use these decks to provide personalized messages involving various areas of life. Tarot readings tell us what is available, avoidable and attainable in our current life’s course. Readings provide insight, perspective, and knowledge about ourselves, our environment and the people in it. Tarot cards are a tool - a very fun, useful tool for making choices and creating self-awareness.
